Happy Saturday, everyone. The heat is on! But the big story won’t just be the temperatures, but also the humidity. So before we get to the forecast let’s do a QUICK humidity/dew point recap
Remember, the *relative humidity* (expressed as a percentage) is useless. The DEW POINT is the indicator that will tell you how humid it actually feels to your human body. A dew point below 60 is generally dry and pleasant. 60-65 is humid, 65-70 is sticky and gross, and 70+ Is oppressive.
Well, this afternoon, as the thermometer heads into the low to mid 90s, the dew point is also heading to the low 70s. Which means that it will *feel* over 100F. Even more importantly, the “wet bulb” temperature, a calculation used to estimate the body’s ability to cool down via sweating, will be dangerously high today. It will also be quite sunny and very blustery. And that June sun is STRONG.
The danger with this particular heat wave is that the dew point will remain elevated overnight. There will be very little relief from the heat. Please drink lots of water, stay in the shade, and avoid strenuous outdoor activities. The heat wave will continue through Tuesday. And even as the heat subsides, temps will remain elevated through the week.
Tl;dr - DANGEROUSLY HOT TODAY. High 95F, DEW POINT = 70s, it will feel HOT and you won’t be able to cool off via sweating. Heat continues through Tuesday.
