The rain and warmth really did a number on the snowpack overnight yet this is only but a blip because freezing cold weather is heading back to Chicago this weekend.

RIght now the temperature is in the upper 30s as the core of the storm system pulls eastward but as it departs it will usher in the first of two cold fronts over the next several days. Temps will gradually sink into the 20s by this evening. Some snow flurries are possible around midday but nothing should accumulate.

Tomorrow will be chilly - highs only in the 20s - as the jet stream sinks south of us. This will set up what I anticipate is THE FINAL storm of this horrific polar vortex event. An “Alberta Clipper” (a fast moving, moisture-deprived storm speeding out of Canada’s north central provinces along an amplified jet stream) which race through the city tomorrow evening dumping (possibly) 1-3 inches of snow. Temps will generally remain in the upper 20s during this storm which should last into Friday morning.

But ten the bottom drops out. The mercury will go racing to the bottom, sending us into the single digits on Friday night, topping out in the teens on Saturday, and possibly heading below zero on Sunday morning.

THE GOOD NEWS: Once this last cold spell clears by early next week, it does look like we are heading back to more “normal for this time of year” territory with THE EXTENDED FORECAST CALLING FOR 30s and 40s through Christmas. This likely means that all this historic snow we received right as December started will likely melt just in time for Christmas leaving us with a snowless holiday. Oh, the irony lol.

Tl;dr - precip ending, temps falling to 20s by night. 20s tomorrow, snow Thur night-Fri, FRIGID this weekend. Warm next week tho:)
